Thomson will launch a major advertising campaign this weekend, once again breaking away from the travel industry’s traditional post-Christmas push.

The advert will run during the 8.25pm ad break during this Saturday’s X Factor on ITV.

The campaign, Holidays Just Got Better, features the new Dreamliner aircraft.

The operator is set to be the first UK airline to operate the state of the art aircraft from May.

The advert aims to highlight how holidays have changed over the last 50 years, with nostalgic videos and snaps from the 1960s through to the modern day.

The retro images of the traditional package holiday are projected onto the surface of the new Dreamliner, creating a contrast of the past against the future.

At a launch event in London last night, Thomson marketing director Jeremy Ellis said: "We want to demonstrate how Thomson is modernising the holiday experience; we’re not selling packages any more, packages are something you get from a mobile phone company, were selling individual experiences."

He said 90% of what Thomson sells now is unique to the operator.

The new £5.5m campaign, created by Beattie McGuinness Bungay, is set to run until December.

The ad will be supported by an ambitious shop window project, as well as outdoor, print and online advertising, video on demand, email marketing, social media and PR.

A campaign hub holidaysjustgotbetter.co.uk has also been launched to engage customers in Thomson’s new campaign.

The fully interactive site will include Thomson’s new advert, a behind the scenes video of the making of the ad as well as infographics and games.
