Short staffed FAA pleads for summer flight cuts

The Federal Aviation Administration is warning airlines to cut flights for the peak summer travel season due to staff shortages.

The FAA says staffing is under pressure in the New York area for air traffic controllers.

It wants to ease the already congested airspace.

It asks airlines to slash flights and deploy larger aircraft to minimize disruption.

The agency said: “We are taking steps to keep air travel to and from New York City this summer safe and smooth, even as we see strong domestic demand.”

The New York City ATC facility has a severe shortage of air traffic controllers, the Federal Aviation Administration says.

The facility manages operations into and out of JFK, LaGuardia Newark Liberty International Airports.

There were widespread flight disruptions last summer as airlines struggled to  bring back enough workers after pandemic downsizing.

United and Delta Air Lines have said they will try to accommodate the request and run larger aircraft, although cancelled flights are likely unavoidable.
