Older people are booking more than half their holidays online as they log on for bargain breaks.

A study of 142 retired people, commissioned by online travel agency www.sunshine.co.uk, found that 62% are booking holidays via the internet.

Almost three quarters of these taught themselves how to use the internet specifically to buy cheap online holidays.

The research found that more than 60% of OAPs are ditching the high street for online travel agents, claiming that the ease of use, and hassle free gathering of all information from home.

More than a third (36%) use the internet to save money on holidays; 24% see it as a hassle-free option; 17% like the fact they can book from the comfort of their own home and 13% feel less pressurised to book a more expensive holiday than when face-to-face with a travel agent.

The agency has also seen a big increase in the number of OAPs booking bargain four-week winter holidays in an attempt to escape the cold British weather and hefty energy bills.

Chris Brown, managing director of sunshine.co.uk, said: “The increase in the amount of OAPs booking their holidays online doesn’t surprise me at all – it’s cheaper, very straight forward and saves time and effort dragging themselves around various travel agents in town.

“It seems OAPs are becoming much more technically-aware and it’s great that so many people are reaping the benefits of shopping online.

“Almost one in five holidays booked through sunshine.co.uk in the last six months came from OAPs and that figure is on the up.”
