Six Flags’ creepy ‘Coffin Challenge’ goes national
When the Six Flags theme park in St. Louis announced their Halloween Coffin Challenge earlier week they likely didn’t expect so many people would be just dying to take part.
The park advertised six slots were up for grabs but has been inundated with more than 25,000 entries.
So what was initially an event specific to St.Louis has now gone nationwide to all Six Flags parks around the country.
"No one does Halloween like Six Flags and this year is the biggest and scariest ever. The 30-Hour Coffin Challenge has taken the country by storm…everybody wants in," said chief marketing officer, Brett Petit.
The interest certainly took the park by surprise.
"We had no clue it would be this huge," said Six Flags spokeswoman Elizabeth Gotway, who came up with the idea of the contest to mark the 30th year of ‘Fright Fest’ at the park.
Six Flags is searching for six brave souls willing to spend 30 straight hours inside a coffin.
As well as a cash prize of $300, the winner gets two 2019 gold season passes, a Fright Fest prize package, and other park ride perks.
If more than one person successfully completes the full 30-hour coffin ordeal, the cash prize will be awarded to just one after a drawing is made.
Perhaps the best perk of all is that the winner gets to take home the ‘slightly used’ coffin.
Participants must stay enclosed in their tomb for the duration except for a designated restroom break every hour.
Each park provides all food and drink and a charging station for participants’ phones.
The huge interest has sparked lots of social media chatter and the St. Louis park says it is also providing a ‘media coffin’ for reporters to experience it themselves while covering the contest.
