The VESTAS: Vision-Destinet European Sustainable Tourism Awards: have started a Facebook and Linkedin campaign as the start of a powerful Social Media campaign to widen the footprint of opportunity for European sustainable tourism initiatives.
The race to the awards has now kicked off with sustainable tourism initiatives from 44 European countries now eligible to participate:
Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, FYR Macedonia, Germany, Georgia, Greece, Guernsey, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Jersey, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Palestine, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and Wales

The award will initially be based on four territorial areas in Europe: Coastal, Urban, Rural, Protected:
In each area interested stakeholders can enter places, products or services in the following categories:
- Most Responsible Destination (villages, towns, cities and county-level NUTS III-V)
- Most Sustainable Tour Package
- Most Sustainable Carrier (air, rail, ship)
- Most Responsible Accommodation
Entries will be judged by their contribution to the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria.
A rusty nail award for those enterprises and services who are clearly unsustainable will also be given for each category.
To demonstrate that the awards cover the issue of sustainability in depth, a special national category will cover ´the country contributing most to peace through tourism`.
