Social media round-up - TravelMole

Social media round-up

Thursday, 18 Jan, 2013 0

This week we have mostly been waiting for it to start snowing in London and avoiding all ‘beef’ burgers … Don’t worry, we have still managed to pull together the latest social media roundup for you. Have a great weekend.

  • Have you managed to stop humming the ‘One pound fish man’ song yet?  In the same way that everyone was doing it ‘Gangham style’ before Christmas, the latest online offering highlights how social media is affecting the way pop stars are uncovered. With over nine million You Tube hits already, expect to be singing along soon…
  • After a week of speculation, Facebook launched ‘Facebook Graph Search’ earlier this week. The technology is designed to encourage users to be more active on the social network by ‘searching’ for friends with common interests. Opinions are divided on whether Google should be concerned and if Facebook users are going to actively use the search function.
  • We can’t wait to take a look at Wikivoyage when it launches next week. From the team behind Wikipeedia, the new site is described as being a ‘free worldwide travel guide’. The main page on the site acts like a guidebook and features links to articles titled, "Destination of the month", "Off the beaten path" and "Featured travel topic".
  • A collective gasp/groan went around the office as the ‘ipad potty’ appeared online earlier this week. From March (and for just £25 from amazon), your toddler can have a high-tech aid to toilet training. The new gadget – invented after figures showed a huge increase in children as young as three being given iPads at Christmas – is a potty with a holster designed to carry an iPad.
  • And finally, who doesn’t love a good infographic? Especially one packed with statistics highlighting the winners and losers of social media in 2012. This infographic from Pardot takes a look at Pinterest, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+ and Facebook and gives them each an end of year school report card in terms of growth, users and return on investment.
