Social media ‘shares’ help reunion and Oz heads to Eurovision
The newly opened Dublin tourist office on Suffolk Street, Dublin is bringing tourists and the Irish travel industry into the age of social media. Visitors will be greeted with commissioned visual content from Dublin, highlighting some of the best spots to visit via The Inspiration Wall, while The Social Media Wall will share what tourists are experiencing during their travels via the hashtag #lovedublin in real time. The App Wall will allow travellers to download apps which will help them explore the country.
This week the power and reach of social media was proved again when a camera, lost six months ago in Australia, was returned to its rightful owner who lives in Jersey, Channel Islands. The GoPro camera was lost by backpacker Chris Hesford, 22, from Jersey while kayaking in Byron Bay, New South Wales and found 60 miles and a few months later by Australian Steve Carmody, who took to social media to find its owner. Within two weeks, Hesford’s photo gained 8,000 shares on Facebook and he was positively identified and his camera was returned.
In more news from ‘Down Under’, a nations’ dreams have come true as it was announced this week that Australia has been entered into this year’s Eurovision competition as a one-off wild card entry. Eurovision creates a social media storm every year and Australians are already creating a buzz about being included in 2015.
And finally… in the Valentine’s spirit, Cyclehoop has teamed up with Hackney based artist Graham McLoughlin and the British Heart Foundation to place 14 #HeartsOfLondon cycle stands across Central London. This installation is designed to promote cycling in the city and celebrate British design, but more importantly, raise awareness for the work of the British Heart Foundation. Accompanying the heart -shaped hoops is a sticker, stating ‘Share the love by making a donation to the British Heart Foundation’. Cyclists – and Topshop – have already shown their admiration with the hashtag #HeartsofLondon.
