South Korea island holiday hotspot Jeju Island is mulling a series of tourist fees.

To help preserve its infrastructure and environment it plans a KRW1,500 ($1) fee per night.

Visitors renting a car or minivan will pay KRW5,000 and KRW10,000 respectively.

Officials at Jeju Special Self-Governing Province said the average total tourist fee would be around KRW8,170 per day.

It said the proposals are now been considered.

It would raise about KRW141 billion for the government in the first year and KRW154 billion by the second year.

It is one of the country’s top leisure destinations.

It is predominately visited by domestic tourists although its popularity is growing with foreigners.

Officials noted its popularity has led to growing trash and sewage issues.

A fixed tourist fee for entry to the island is again being considered.
