Dallas-based Southwest Airlines is investing in SAFFiRE Renewables. The company is part of a Department of Energy project to develop sustainable aviation fuel.
It is working on converting corn stover waste feedstock to SAF. Southwest says this ‘game-changing technology ’could contribute 5% of its jet fuel requirements by 2030. The airline’s goal is replacing 10% of its total jet fuel consumption with SAF by 2030.
SAFFiRE says and commercializing this technology could result in the production of 7.5 billion gallons of SAF per year by 2040.
