Sydney Tower Celebrates 25th Birthday
Sydney’s tallest building, Sydney Tower, celebrates its 25th birthday and to help celebrate the birthday, all visitors to Sydney Tower will receive 25% off the cost of entry during September, with more daring guests able to tackle the tower’s new outdoor, over-the-edge Skywalk attraction for just $79.
A Tower-Run-Up race and Walk-up event on Friday September 1 will launch the birthday month, with athletes tipped to sprint up the 1504 steps in less than eight minutes.
Opened on September 27, 1981 at a cost of $36 million and after six years of construction, Sydney Tower was one of the world’s tallest buildings, soaring 305m over the city. Twenty five years and 16 million visitors later – four times the population of Sydney, the Sydney Tower remains a defining Sydney landmark equal in height to the Eiffel Tower and more than double the height of the Harbour Bridge.
Still the tallest tower in Australia, with one of the highest observation decks south of the equator, Sydney Tower is so tall visitors can see ships at sea approaching Sydney two hours before someone on the beach, and watch planes land at Sydney Airport 10km away.
2000 saw the debut at the tower of one of Australia’s largest simulated rides, OzTrek, which uses 3D imagery, surround-sound and real-motion seats to take visitors on a ‘magic carpet ride’ around Australia and in October 2005, the latest attraction, Sydney Skywalk, was unveiled, providing thrillseekers with the chance to walk harnessed outside on the tower’s roof for the first time, with moving glass-floored platforms extending out over city streets.
Sydney Tower and OzTrek is open daily 9am-10.30pm (Saturdays to 11.30pm) while Skywalk tours operate from 9am-10pm daily.
