Thailand to again consider legal casinos
Thailand could revisit the issue of legal casino resorts in an effort to boost tourism and tax revenues.
The appetite for gambling is high as only state sanctioned horse race betting is officially allowed.
Thais reportedly spent $1.6 billion on gambling websites during the last FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
However, opposition to legal gambling is even higher with a majority against it due to addiction fears and associated social problems.
A casino resort feasibility study was submitted to parliament last week and will be considered.
Some travel industry leaders believe legal casino resort gambling would be a big attraction for overseas tourists, and successful, even if it remained illegal or heavily restricted to Thai citizens.
Legalised gambling has been proposed a number of times in the past but has never been advanced due to public opposition.
