Thailand to introduce tourist insurance fund
Thailand has set up a THB50 million fund to aid tourists who find themselves victims of crime, suffer accidents or for other ‘unfortunate events.’
It won’t cover tourists’ ‘carelessness or when committing illegal acts,’ the Tourism Authority of Thailand said.
The fund was unveiled by the tourism and public health ministries.
“Foreign tourists are eligible for coverage if they have valid passports and must be visiting Thailand by August 31 with a tourist visa or for the purpose of tourism only,” they said.
It has been approved by the government ‘as part of our ongoing efforts to assure tourist safety and boost tourist confidence,’ tourism minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol explained.
“By pooling our resources together to ensure tourists receive emergency medical services in time will help boost confidence,” the Thai National Institute of Emergency Medicine said.
“The co-operation will also promote the efficiency and quality of our emergency medical systems.”
