Travel industry carbon emissions initiative unveiled
A dedicated travel industry service to provide carbon emissions reporting, education, reduction strategies and offset products has been introduced.
The Carbon Consultancy has created a web-based Carbon Responsible platform which can be used by both consumers and the industry to report and manage carbon emissions and their offset.
A number of companies will immediately use the service, including Baltic Holidays and Cox & Kings. The platform provides travel industry partners with reporting/management tools to control and inform their activity in the ‘carbon space’, according to the company.
The company provides staff training, carbon audits, communications support and education to its clients.
The Carbon Responsible platform provides information, links and UK-based offset projects which ensure long term viability, ease of verification and relevance to consumers.
According to CEO Hugo Kimber, the initiative is based upon the principle that education and not just offset or tax alone will enable a long-term reduction in emissions, from air travel and in general.
Kimber, with 20 years experience in tour operations, destination management and business travel, said: “The industry needs to have its own voluntary carbon programme rather than being a sideshow to multi-sector carbon offset promoters and the industry must start to lead the carbon debate. We are currently behind public opinion and must catch up.
“Each individual and company needs to take responsibility to save emissions where they can and mitigate through offset those emissions that cannot be saved.
“Climate change affects many destinations around the world and as an industry we must do what we can to reduce our carbon emissions. Our company products and services provide the tools for the industry to make a contribution to emissions mitigation and reduction”.
