A woman had her leg amputated in a horrific freak accident in a Bangkok airport.

Her leg became trapped in the end of a moving walkway at Don Mueang International Airport.

The 57-year-old Thai woman was rushed to hospital but had to have her leg amputated due to the severe injury.

The cause of the malfunction is still unclear but the airport turned off all travellators and each was inspected by engineers.

“I would like to convey our deepest sorrow,” said airport director Karant Thanakuljeerapat.

The airport will provide compensation to the woman, Karant said.

Her family has requested CCTV footage to learn more about how it happened.

An official investigation is ongoing.
