TravelMole server hit by storm

Wednesday, 30 Oct, 2012 0

TravelMole’s server was hit this morning when its New York building was badly flooded.

Flooding of the sub-basement of the Broad Street building submerged and destroyed the site’s diesel pumps and prevented fuel from being pumped to the generators on the mezzanine level.

Once fuel reserves had been exhausted, the generator was no longer be able to sustain operation.

This meant the TravelMole website went down for several hours and the UK newswire could not be sent at its usual time.

However, the TravelMole team was able to make use of its Twitter page and Facebook page to keep the travel industry up to date with news until power was restored.

"While reporting on the storm, we had no idea that we would be directly affected," said Bev Fearis, Editor in Chief.

"Luckily we were able to make use of social media to keep the news coming.

"Our US Editor, based in another part of New York, had been sending us updates late into last night, but her offices were becoming flooded and her last email to us said the power was cutting out.

"It’s frightening to imagine what is going on over there and we hope all of our friends and colleagues are safe and well and that this catastrophe is soon over."
