The 4th of July holiday is gearing up to be the busiest air travel week on record, the TSA says.
It could top the milestone of 3 million air travelers in a single day.
There were 2.99 million travelers screened at TSA checkpoints a week ago, which is the busiest ever day so far.
The TSA predicts more than 32 million air travelers over the holiday period from June 27 to July 8.
The agency expects to surpass 3 million passengers today.
“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever and summer travel usually peaks over the Independence Day holiday,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said.
“We are ready, along with our airline and airport partners, to handle this boost in passenger volumes.”
The TSA forecasts a 5.4% increase this July 4 holiday period.
The TSA says seven of the top 10 busiest travel days at airports have occurred in the past month.
Pekoske said the agency has been planning a long time ahead of the holiday with extra recruiting and has ‘cut our attrition rates by almost half.’
“We’re excited about the traffic coming back but our main focus is to make sure you get there safely,” FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker said.
The TSA is reminding travelers to be patient and to get to the airport earlier than usual.
