UK operators offered Viewdata replacement
A US company is marketing a software system to UK operators, which it hopes will replace Viewdata.
The software, called “Next Generation Tour Operating Systems”(NGTOS), was developed by the privately owned, Vinet Global. It effectively manages operators stock by providing access to the operators inventory online. This means the operator can allow password-protected access to agents or direct to consumers to research and book their holiday.
For an operator booking between 10,000 and 30,000 passengers a year, the software would cost around £50,000.
Richard Parkes, sales and marketing manager for Vinet in Europe told TravelMole: “This package will enable operators to run their business without spending lots of money on hardware. It offers the same services as a main frame computer and Viewdata, but it is faster, thanks to the internet and Microsoft Windows.”
NGTOS is interfaced with Worldspan and Sabre, so it provides access to real-time booking information. Mr Parkes said that Amadeus and Galileo would be interfaced shortly. He said: “Both will be onboard without a shadow of doubt within a year. It is just a question of which comes first”.
Mr Parkes added: “Changing demands from the public have dictated a change in the way we use technology. Dynamic packaging is in demand, and travel professionals need to adapt to meet these needs”.
Vinet Global supplies NGTOS to operators such as New York based Tour Host International. The product has been available in the UK for a year, but now that it is set to establish links with the four main GDSs, it is appealing to the wider market. Mr Parkes told TravelMole that Vinet was already in talks with “very large customers in the UK”.
Industry experts have debated for some time the issue of whether Viewdata’s days are numbered. But, as of yet no company has come up with an alternative distribution technology to be snapped up by the major operators.
