United Airlines wants to launch second daily Newark-Shanghai flight

Tuesday, 05 Nov, 2018 0

United Airlines plans to double down on flights between Newark and Shanghai.

The airline has applied to launch a second daily flight on the route from 2020, which would enable United to serve passengers with morning and afternoon departures in both directions.

It would likely deploy a 292-seat Boeing 777-200 for the new flights.

"If approved, this additional flight will help facilitate the development of increased business and tourism, and provide additional capacity for customers," said United CEO, Oscar Munoz.

Standing in United’s way is rival Delta which wants to begin Shanghai flights from Minneapolis, and American Airlines.

American has authority to operate 14 weekly US-China frequencies but wants to mothball these for up to a year.

That is anti-competitive, United says.

"American’s choices should not result in it being able to effectively warehouse these frequencies from others until it is ready to make use of them," United wrote in its DOT application.

American applied to the DOT for a dormancy waiver last month.

United says there is sufficient available slots for United and Delta as long as the DOT rejects the dormancy waiver.

The US-China bilateral air service agreement has a strict cap on the number of flights allowed from the US to China’s ‘zone 1’ cities which includes Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.
