United airlines has opened a ‘Miles Shop’ concession at its Newark airport hub offering products and services for MileagePlus frequent flyer members.
Operated by airport concession company OTG, it is an industry first retail unit dedicated to frequent flyers enabling members to use their miles for shopping.
Members can also pay with cash or cards and receive five miles for every dollar spent.
The shop is stocked with travel gadgets, books and electronics and limited edition gifts such as signed cookbooks from Alain Ducasse ranging in ‘price’ from 600 miles to 50,000 miles.
"The MileagePlus team works each day with a singular mission: to make the world’s best travel loyalty programme more rewarding for our members. The Miles Shop at Newark Terminal C is a terrific extension of that mission, as it offers United customers expanded opportunities to earn and use their miles as diverse as our customers are themselves," said United Vice President of Loyalty Praveen Sharma."
Last year Newark’s Terminal C was the first airport to accept MileagePlus miles for food and drinks at selected outlets.
"United has been an instrumental partner in developing innovative ways to expand its MileagePlus program at Terminal C," said OTG CEO Rick Blatstein.
"We’ve received tremendous positive feedback since last November when we introduced the ability for customers to use their MileagePlus miles for meals, and the development of the Miles Shop is a direct result of that unique experience."
