Universal Studios Beijing to introduce facial recognition entry system

Thursday, 17 Oct, 2019 0

Universal Studios Beijing has unveiled details of its facial recognition entry system.

It will become Universals largest park and the first phase is set to open in 2021.

It will use facial scanning technology for ticketless entry which was developed by Chinese internet giant Alibaba.

The facial recognition cameras are integrated with Alibaba’s Alipay digital wallet which can instantly verify is a guest has paid.

Alipay users can also open storage lockers, pay for meals and join fast track lines for rides.

"There is no more seamless way to enjoy what we’re building than using the Alibaba technology," said Brian Roberts, CEO of Universal parent company Comcast.

Facial recognition tech has taken off in a big way in China despite some privacy concerns.

Universal says guests unwilling to use facial recognition will have other options to access the park and pay for purchases.

Construction is well under way on the park in Beijing’s Tongzhou district.

It will have rides and attractions featuring characters Harry Potter and Kung Fu Panda and the Universal resort will eventually house three hotels.
