Brazil’s waiving of visas for American’s has fueled a big rise in inbound visitation from the US.

Brazil waived the requirement for visas for US travelers last summer and has since seen a 39% increase in visits.

Brazil eliminated the expensive visa fees for the United States, along with Canada, Australia and Japan last June.

It is also doing the same for emerging markets China and India.

Brazil is much more than the land of caipirinhas and tiny bikinis. We want to focus on ecotourism and our vast natural resources," Gilson Machado, president of tourism marketing agency Embratur told Reuters.

Machado said he is hopeful of getting US carriers to add nonstop flights to more cities in Brazil.

Embratur is also touting Brazil as a safer destination.

Violent crime dropped by 25% in the big cities during President Jair Bolsonaro’s first year in office, and security has been beefed up at major tourist destinations, he said.

Bolsonaro has bolstered Embratur’s marketing budget to $120 million, and it will use some of these funds for a major campaign highlighting its improved safety and natural attractions.
