Volcano eruption forces Mexico City flight cancellations

Air travel in and out of Mexico City has been disrupted after Mexico’s most active volcano erupted.

It covered the air in volcanic ash, grounding some flights.

Around 25 million residents live within a 60 mile radius of the Popocatépetl volcano, which was placed under a level two volcanic threat.

At least 20 planes came into contact with the ash cloud as they landed at Mexico City International Airport and were grounded for checks.

‘”Specialized teams and management remain on alert and are evaluating the ash conditions,” the airport said.

“At this time, the volcanic ash cloud is heading toward the Gulf of Mexico.”

The airport remains open but passengers today are being advised to check their flight status before setting off for the airport.

Although the ash clouds are heading away from the capital, Mexico’s National Center for Disaster Prevention said this could change.

In 2019, the volcano suffered a series of eruptions and cancelled hundreds of flights
