Warning: Skip the short black in Moscow
LONDON – What costs US$6.20 in Moscow but only US$1.90 in Buenos Aires?
The answer: A cup of coffee.
The findings are part of Mercer’s Cost of Living Survey, which researches 143 cities around the world and compares their costs to those of New York.
The cost of living in London has increased so much over the last year that the capital has become the second most expensive city in the world.
Asia had four of the top 10 most expensive cities in the rankings, with the Japanese city of Osaka taking eighth place. Australia’s largest city, Sydney, was the most expensive in Oceania, taking 21st place.
Soaring property prices combined with the most expensive transport system in the world has put London above Tokyo, Geneva, Paris and New York. The only city to beat London is Moscow, which tops the poll for the second year running.
The survey compares the cost of renting a flat, buying a daily cup of coffee as well as entertainment, clothing and food costs.
With New York as the base city scoring 100 points, London comes out with a score of 126, compared with Moscow on 134, Tokyo on 122, Rome on 97.6, Dubai on 88.8, Manila on 61.3. The cheapest city is Asuncion with 50.
