Wellington appoints dedicated Oz Manager

Wellington, New Zealand’s national and cultural capital, has appointed Ms Sarah Peacock to the new role of Australian Marketing Manager, responsible for promoting Wellington to both consumers and the travel industry in Australia.

Ms Peacock’s appointment continues a very pro-active drive by the city’s visitor marketing organisation, Positively Wellington Tourism, to build arrival numbers from Australia by 65,000, or 35 per cent, by 2007.

“Australia is Wellington’s fastest growing source of visitors, accounting for about one third of our total arrivals,” said Ms Peacock. “My main objective is to increase the number of Australian visitors into Wellington by promoting our city as a short-break holiday destination, and a base from which to visit nearby regions.”

Ms Peacock, who was previously Trade Marketing Manager for Positively Wellington Tourism, said a key part of her new role would be to keep Australia’s travel industry updated about Wellington’s new and upcoming tourism product.

“We will carry out regular training to improve the knowledge of retail travel agents about Wellington, Wairarapa and Regional Wellington and we hope to ultimately influence the sales and use of tourism product,” said Ms Peacock.

“Our trade activity will involve sales visits, an industry roadshow, front line training and trade familiarisation visits to Wellington as well as looking for opportunities to work jointly with wholesalers to promote Wellington,” she said.  “In my experience, having previously hosted travel agents, wholesalers and media from Australia, visitors quickly fall in love with Wellington as soon as they see what we have to offer, from fine wining and dining to the arts, outdoor activities and extensive touring options.”

“And with more than 50 direct flights per week from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to Wellington, we want to position our city as a holiday destination in its own right, and not just a stopover point.”
