XL collapse sparks surge in Triton ATOL applications
Triton claims an “unprecedented†surge in applications to join its ATOL scheme for ABTA members following the collapse of XL Leisure Group.
Launched in April, the scheme is utilised by all Global members and 300 Worldchoice, Advantage and Independent Options agents.
The TritonATOL helpdesk took more than 300 calls and activated 60 additional Triton members to the scheme last week.
Despite the withdrawal of Advantage from Triton, the TritonATOL scheme remains a key offering for all supporters of Triton products, according to the organisation.
“Advantage members continue to sell and support Triton products so why, at this key time, would we consider pulling the Triton ATOL scheme away from Advantage members?†said product development director Jason Edwards.
“They’ve got some great members who remain at risk and they are as welcome as anyone else to join this scheme as far as we’re concerned.â€
He added: “The surge in interest is clearly down to the demise of XL.
“Sadly and at some point we knew it would take something like this for agents to realise the implications of leaving nothing to chance.
“It really isn’t just about being ATOL bonded, that’s just one part of the jigsaw. When creating a package, the Package Travel Regulations Act comes into effect which ultimately means that other crucial cover has to be in place and the TritonATOL scheme has it all.
“It’s been a huge price to pay for some with massive lessons learnt, although those who were bonded under our scheme have been able to rest in the knowledge that they were financially covered and in addition, received the guidance and support when they needed it most.â€
Edwards said: “There has also been a huge amount of publicity surrounding the collapse of XL.
“Consumer interest regarding their protection is at an all time high and it really is a sensitive subject out there on the high street.
“Our members have been inundated with queries from the general public about protection.â€
