Kick starting the snow season for 2022, South Lake Tahoe is prepping new additions, openings and the 50th anniversary celebrations. Check out what’s new this winter. Heavenly Mountain Resort Heavenly Mountain Resort is increasing uphill capacity at its North Bowl lift by 40%. The Vail Resorts operated mountain will replace its three-person lift with a new high-speed, four-person chair. By auctioning off the three-person chairs, Heavenly raised $162,000 (£140,000) for nonprofits the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, Ski Run Community Park, and the EpicPromise Foundation. The North Bowl upgrade will reduce rider time on the Boulder lift. Kirkwood Ski resorts Celebrates 50th Birthday Opening on 2 December, Kirkwood Mountain Resort will celebrate its 50th anniversary of operations this season. They will be hosting an Apres kick-off party and premiering the new short film "50 Years Deep: The Story of Kirkwood". Tahoe Events Center exterior work on schedule The Tahoe Events Center is in the final stages of being closed in for the fall and winter months, paving the way for interior work to continue in anticipation of the July 2023 opening. The undergrounding of existing overhead utility lines, and construction of new curbs and sidewalks around the perimeter are being finished this month. The Desolation Hotel The latest addition to the destination, the Desolation Hotel welcomed its first guests this summer. The hotel is all about nature, sustainability, and luxury. The name refers to the Desolation Wilderness to the east. Maggie's, the third-floor restaurant, is named for Maggie's Peak, actually two peaks within the Desolation Wilderness. The all-new, 21-unit hotel stands on the site of the former Tahoe Villa. Ten of the units are three-story townhouses with a private garage, EV charging, and Japanese-style soaking tub on the third-floor balcony. -

A trend that began about ten years ago is now in full force. Lodging properties in South Lake Tahoe are being transformed from “this could be anywhere” accommodations, some originally built in the 1960s, to true Tahoe-style hospitality. These new properties offer amenities that are more in tune with the experiences that travelers expect today – local authenticity, connection and community, sustainability, the option of seclusion, convenience, value, and pet inclusivity. New hotels. The latest addition to the destination, the Desolation Hotel, will welcome its first guests on 30th July 2022 This hotel is all about nature, sustainability, and luxury. The name refers to the Desolation Wilderness to the east. Maggie’s, the third-floor restaurant, is named for Maggie’s Peak, actually two peaks within the Desolation Wilderness. The pool bar (located next to the saltwater pool and 14-person spa) is Velma’s, for a lake also within that wilderness area. The all-new, 21-unit hotel stands on the site of the former Tahoe Villa and the few trees that were removed can be seen in the structural supports. Ten of the units are three-story townhouses with a private garage, EV charging capabilities, washing machine and dryer, and Japanese-style soaking tub on the third-floor balcony. The Tahoe Daily Tribune recently interviewed the owners/developers, Tahoe residents Eric and Chet Pipkins. Hampton Inn & Suites also opened in July 2022. It looks like a modern ski chalet (on the site of the former Super 8 on Lake Tahoe Blvd.), less than a mile from the beach, Heavenly Village, and the Heavenly Gondola. Guests will enjoy a lobby bar, heated indoor pool, heated patio, hot tub, and fire pit. Ski lockers have boot and glove warmers, and bike lockers are available. There are 12 EV chargers on-site for guests driving electric cars, seven for Teslas, and five standard chargers with conduit underground for future chargers. This very smart hotel utilizes solar and efficient energy consumption and a complete water retention system, so water runoff does not leave the site, helping to preserve and improve lake quality.
