Marriott Internationalis introducing the City Express by Marriott brand into the United States and Canada. This marks the company’s entry into the affordable midscale transient segment in North America. “Since entering the affordable midscale space with the acquisition of City Express in the Caribbean and Latin America (CALA) a year ago, we have seen tremendous interest for the brand,” said Diana Plazas-Trowbridge, Global Brand Leader, Select Brands. “With this announcement, Marriott is excited to continue our growth in the affordable midscale segment.” In May 2023, Marriott announced the acquisition of the City Express brand portfolio in CALA, which marked the company’s entry into the affordable midscale segment. It comprises 17,000 rooms across Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Chile. Since the acquisition, consumer and owner interest has fueled growth of the brand. Expansion is also planned to Bolivia and Nicaragua. Additionally, the company recently announced plans to expand City Express by Marriott in Brazil. Marriott says it has received extensive interest from owners and franchisees, and anticipates signed agreements, with possible hotel openings, in the U.S. and Canada in the next few months. Existing City Express by Marriott properties have been integrated into the Marriott Bonvoy

Marriott International has secured a long-term licensing agreement with Sonder Holdings Inc., adding about 9,000 rooms to the Marriott portfolio by the year-end. It will also see its pipeline bolstered by about 1,500 extra rooms. Under the terms, Sonder's mostly apartment-style accommodations in urban markets, will join the Marriott system under a new collection called ‘Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy.’ With this addition, Marriott now expects full year 2024 net rooms growth of up to 6.5%. Marriott will receive a royalty fee based on a percentage of Sonder gross room revenues. "We are excited about the addition of Sonder's portfolio, which will expand our portfolio of longer-stay accommodations in key markets," said Tim Grisius, Global Officer, M&A, Business Development and Real Estate for Marriott International. "With the planned addition, we will be able to provide guests seeking apartment-style urban accommodations with even more options." Sonder was founded in 2014, and currently operates apartment-style accommodations and small boutique hotels in urban markets. It has a presence across North America, Europe and the Middle East. From later this year, Marriott Bonvoy members will be able to earn and redeem points on stays at around 200 Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy properties. The full integration of Sonder properties with Marriott's digital channels, is expected in 2025.

Marriott Hotels, the flagship brand of the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio has marked the grand opening of its first all-inclusive resort.  Marriott Cancun, An All-Inclusive Resort is now open, housing 450 redesigned rooms, including 124 premium ocean view rooms and 38 suites with balconies. “Our debut property in Cancun perfectly embodies the Marriott Hotels' All-Inclusive promise,” said Drew Iddings, VP, Premium Classic Brands. Marriott Cancun has a wide range of amenities and services with 13 diverse dining options, daytime and nightly activities for all ages and a water park, featuring with water slides and an exclusive adults-only area. There is a fitness center, arcade area, and a 5,000-square-feet indoor/outdoor CAMP Club by Marriott just for kids. The Cancun resort aims to be a premier destination for events and meetings, with over 24,000 square feet of event space. To nark the grand opening, the Cancun resort has an exclusive 20% discount on all bookings made until August 30, 2024. "We are absolutely thrilled to extend a warm welcome to our guests at our newly renovated Cancun resort," said GM Christopher Calabrese. Marriott Hotels is further expanding its all-inclusive portfolio in Mexico at Puerto Vallarta, and is opening a resort in Djerba, Tunisia over the next few months.

  W All-Inclusive Punta Cana, Dominican Republic is slated to open in late 2024. The launch is expected to mark the debut of W Hotels both in the Dominican Republic and in the all-inclusive space - a brand known for its modern, bold luxury service with a vibrant ambiance. Situated on the picturesque shores of Uvero Alto, this adults-only, all-inclusive, new-build resort is anticipated to feature 349 guestrooms with balconies and plunge pools, as well as several suites. Marriott International has marked the milestone of 50 hotels open in Thailand. It comes as the Madi Paidi Bangkok, Autograph Collection officially welcomed guests.
