Adventure tourism continues to gain momentum among holidaymakers looking for more than just relaxation. From mountain summits and hiking networks to roller coasters and off-road terrain, a new study highlights the world’s top destinations for adrenaline-fueled experiences in 2026.

Conducted by Duel.com, the research analyzed 61 countries worldwide, scoring each destination across multiple adventure indicators including the number of roller coasters, rock climbing routes, hiking trails, mountain biking networks, off-road tracks, and even casino density as a proxy for entertainment infrastructure. Each country was then ranked using a normalized “adrenaline score” out of 10.

France tops global adventure ranking

France takes the number one spot as the world’s ultimate destination for thrill-seekers, achieving an impressive adrenaline score of 8.86/10. The country stands out for its exceptional diversity of outdoor experiences, combining high-adrenaline sports with extensive natural landscapes.

With more than 720,000 hiking trails, 190,000 mountain biking routes, and over 18,000 off-road tracks, France offers one of the most comprehensive adventure tourism infrastructures globally. Its mountainous regions — including the Alps, the Pyrenees, and the iconic Mont Blanc massif — provide year-round opportunities for skiing, climbing, and high-altitude trekking. Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest peak at 4,810 m., remains a key draw for experienced climbers and mountaineers.

Mexico and Spain close behind

Mexico ranks second with an adrenaline score of 8.56/10, supported by its strong mix of outdoor adventure offerings. The country features over 345,000 hiking trails and more than 43,000 off-road routes, alongside a growing reputation for rock climbing and eco-adventure tourism. From jungle trekking in the Yucatán Peninsula to canyoning and volcano hikes, Mexico continues to position itself as a diverse adventure hub.

Spain follows closely in third place with a score of 8.41/10. The country stands out for its extraordinary hiking infrastructure, boasting more than 10.3 million hiking trails — the highest in the ranking. Spain also recorded over 6.4 million mountain biking routes and extensive climbing opportunities, particularly in regions such as Catalonia, Andalusia, and the Pyrenees.

Strong performance from the Americas and Europe

Argentina ranks fourth, driven by its dramatic landscapes and high-altitude terrain, including peaks reaching nearly 7,000 m. The country offers a strong mix of hiking, climbing, and off-road adventure opportunities across the Andes.

The United States comes in fifth, reflecting its vast scale and variety of adventure environments. With nearly 3,000 casinos, 908 roller coasters, and extensive national park systems, the US combines entertainment-driven thrill experiences with outdoor exploration across states like Colorado, California, and Utah.

Italy (6th) and Brazil (7th) also feature strongly, each offering a blend of mountainous terrain, dense hiking networks, and growing adventure tourism sectors. Colombia (8th) continues to rise as a South American adventure hotspot, particularly for trekking and high-altitude exploration.

Turkey (9th) stands out for its balance of historical landscapes and outdoor activities, while Germany (10th) rounds out the top ten, supported by strong infrastructure for cycling, hiking, and theme park attractions.

Emerging global adventure hotspots

Further down the ranking, Chile (11th) and Peru (14th) reinforce South America’s strong positioning in high-altitude and trekking tourism, while Canada (12th) and the UK (13th) demonstrate solid performance across hiking, cycling, and nature-based experiences.

Belgium completes the top 15, benefiting from a dense network of cycling and hiking routes despite its smaller geographic size.

The findings underline a broader shift in travel demand, with more travelers seeking active, experience-led holidays that combine physical challenge with natural exploration. From alpine climbing in France to jungle expeditions in Mexico and vast hiking systems in Spain, the global appetite for adventure travel shows no sign of slowing.

As destinations continue to invest in outdoor infrastructure and experiential tourism, competition for the title of “ultimate adventure destination” is likely to intensify in the years ahead.
