More than half of experts responding to Tourism Economics’ Travel Industry Monitor 2024 survey for the WTM Global Travel Report cited blended leisure and business travel as a tourism growth opportunity, making it the top niche mentioned. Business travel’s performance has been “something of a surprise relative to prior expectations,” the report notes. The post-pandemic persistence of online meetings and events was expected to cause its decline. Instead, in person meets are “still highly valued” and business overnights and spending have surpassed previous peaks. The report notes business travel is being built largely around Business Events. Annual growth in business visits of around 19% in 2024 outstrips a growth of around 11% for leisure visits according to Tourism Economics. Though business travel’s growth is expected to slow somewhat to around 17% in 2025, over the period 2024 to 2030 such visits are predicted to grow by around 50% against a growth in leisure visits of a little under 30% for the same period. Significantly, business travellers are staying longer and spending more per trip. While the volume of international business visits currently remains 6% below pre-pandemic levels, the number of overnights are 3% above that 2019 benchmark. Such extended visits are partly thanks to the trend for ‘bleisure’ - the combining of business trips with extra days of leisure tourism. In this respect remote working has had a positive effect the report notes, enabling travellers to be more flexible about working overseas around their leisure time. However pure leisure travel, which is also seeing extending lengths of stay, remains by a large margin the most important travel segment in terms of volume and spending, comprising 69% of arrivals and 80% of global travel spending. Juliette Losardo, exhibition director for World Travel Market London added: “WTM’s aim is to help attendees navigate change, ensuring travel professionals are equipped for the year ahead. Commissioning the WTM Global Travel Report supports our commitment to providing attendees with the latest trends shaping the travel landscape. “Using an expansive databank covering more than 185 countries worldwide as destinations and as origin markets, covering all major bilateral tourism flows in terms of visits, nights and spend, as well as unique industry insights, the report gives a comprehensive outlook on tourism.” The WTM Global Travel Report is produced in conjunction with Tourism Economics, part of Oxford Economics. It will be unveiled on Tuesday 5 November at WTM London which runs 5-7 November at Excel London, -

The exclusive WTM Global Travel Report – compiled in association with renowned researchers at Oxford Economics – has revealed that the emergence of more affluent consumers in markets around the world is driving “shifts” in the traditional travel norms – with some intrepid travellers even seeking riskier activities. “The popularity of travel has fuelled remarkable creativity. Be it volcano-boarding in Nicaragua or cage-diving with sharks in South Africa, a broadening range of activities is available to consumers, driven by growing demand for new and unique experiences,” said the report, unveiled at WTM London on 5 November. “Consumers are also more open to adventure, thrill-seeking and extreme experiences. “Soft adventure activities, which are generally low risk and require limited experience, such as hiking, cycling and wildlife watching, represent the largest share of adventure tourism opportunities. “However, hard adventure activities, like skydiving, mountaineering and whitewater rafting, are likely to gain increased traction among a typically wealthier audience more open to adventure and willing to take higher risks. This type of riskier travel is also known as frontier travel.” Tourism Economics – an Oxford Economics company – found that 29% of travellers reported increased interest in adventure travel; 34% of consumers reported a growing interest in rural and nature-based tourism; and 57% of travellers are more interested in visiting new destinations compared to five years ago. This increased demand for fresh places to visit will drive growth in smaller countries, such as Armenia and Serbia in Europe, as well as African destinations which offer safari holidays and adventure travel, added the report. Saudi Arabia and Albania achieved visitor arrival growth of 80% and 74% respectively in 2024 compared to 2019, it noted, thanks to the urge to explore off the beaten track. The “experience economy”, in which consumers prioritise memories over physical goods, has also seen growth over the last decade as developing markets have spent a higher share of their disposable income on travel, catching up the proportion of spending in many advanced economies. Furthermore, Gen Z and Millennials place greater emphasis on experiences rather than materialistic goods, “which bodes well for the travel outlook”, added the report. “The seemingly boundless opportunities for travel companies to innovate by offering distinct and personalised offerings, aided by technology, presents exciting possibilities for the industry,” it said. Juliette Losardo, Exhibition Director at WTM London, said: “This WTM Global Travel Report is a crucial overview for the industry to see how trends have developed during 2024 and what could be around the corner in 2025 and beyond. “With the rise of the middle class in many more countries, there’s ever more demand for more unusual and authentic experiences as holidaymakers want to get under the skin of different cultures – or even tick off those exciting bucket-list activities with the ‘frontier’ travel trend we’ve been seeing. “Our report will prompt discussions throughout the three days of WTM London and beyond, helping drive the innovation that will support sustainable growth in our sector.” For more information and to book your ticket, please visit: https://www.wtm.com/london/en-gb.html -

This is one of the trends revealed in the WTM Global Travel Report in conjunction with Tourism Economics, which will be unveiled as World Travel Market London opens today. By 2030, overnight tourism arrivals (international visitors staying at least one night) are projected to have grown by over 30% to two billion, driven by emerging outbound markets. The report says traveller spend is also rising. Global leisure tourism expenditure in 2024 is now worth over US$5.5 trillion, at 24% above 2019. It surmises consumers appear to be prioritising travel with it accounting for a greater proportion of their spending in the major economies than in the 10 years pre-pandemic. Overall, according to Tourism Economics data, travel spending as a percentage of consumer spending reached 8.8% in 2024, compared to an average 8.2% between 2010 and 2019. Even in markets such as Asia Pacific where some destinations, notably China, have lagged the recovery, travel as a share of consumer spending is returning close to the heights of 2019. The number of overnight stays in all paid accommodation is set to exceed 2023 levels by 7% and 2019 levels by 16% according to Tourism Economics. It says stays are getting longer with average length of stay for both domestic and international travel increasing in the recovery period and remains above the pre-Covid average. In fact, the average length of stay in hotels on international trips was up 12% in 2024 compared to 2019. Tourism Economics also noted a significant growth in so-called 'bleisure' with business travellers staying on for extra leisure-orientated days. Juliette Losardo, Exhibitor Director, WTM London, said: "WTM's aim is to help attendees navigate change, ensuring travel professionals are equipped for the year ahead.” “Commissioning the WTM Global Travel Report supports our commitment to providing attendees with the latest trends shaping the travel landscape.”Related News Stories:

Held at Excel London on 5- 7 November, over 40,000 travel industry professionals are set to attend the 44th edition. On track to host the most travel exhibitors ever, WTM London has reported a 7% growth in exhibitor numbers this year. It will host over 4,000 global tourism boards, hoteliers, transport services, technology brands, associations and tour operators. It's estimated that more than £2.2 billion worth of business deals will be signed at the event. According to VisitBritain data, international delegates visiting the UK for a trade show on average spend £352 per day, which estimates a total visitor spend of £71 million. In a recent report from Deloitte, they suggested that for every £1,000 spent, a further £1,800 is generated in direct tourism gross value. This adds up to a £200m injection from WTM London into the economy. About 40% of the visitors are spending three days in London for the event, while one-third will spend at least seven days in the city. Juliette Losardo, Exhibitor Director, WTM London, said: "While the travel trade are busy with £2.2billion worth of travel and tourism deals, we're proud that WTM also has such a significant impact on our host city of London."Related News Stories:

World Tourism Day is an annual UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) initiative to highlight ways the sector can help countries make progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals – the UN roadmap for a better world by 2030. This year, World Tourism Day (September 27) has the theme of “Tourism and green investment”, with an emphasis on investing in three key areas: education, sustainable infrastructure and technology. To highlight the importance of sustainability in tourism, WTM London has announced details of its sustainability sessions across all three days, which will include the Sustainability Summit on Day Three. The first Summit session is entitled ‘Where Next? Reimagining Tourism in a Constantly Changing Climate’. The debate will ask questions such as “What should good tourism look like as the climate and biodiversity crises keep getting worse?”; “How can we keep selling holidays and avoid greenwash?” and “Do we need to tell a new story?” The discussion will be moderated by Jeremy Smith, who co-founded Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency in 2020 – the first grassroots global initiative that brings together tourism destinations and businesses to work together on climate action. Other sessions during the Summit will ask how the tourism sector can provide more sustainable holidays and explore greener transport options in Europe, such as rail travel. Experts leading these debates will include Harold Goodwin, WTM Responsible Tourism Advisor; Ruth Wright, Euronews Travel Managing Editor; Carlos Abade, Chairman, VisitPortugal; Martin Brackenbury, Advisor to UNWTO; Sacha Dench, CEO & Ambassador for the UN’s Convention on Migratory Species; and Vincent Nijs, Chief Strategist, Visit Flanders. Speakers at the green transport session will be Paloma Zapata, CEO at Sustainable Travel International, Björn Bender, CEO at Rail Europe and José Ramón Bauzá Díaz, Committee of Transport and Tourism, European Parliament. Juliette Losardo, Exhibition Director at World Travel Market London, said: “Sustainability is the cornerstone of tourism development. Investing in sustainable infrastructure and green policies across our sector is now more critical than ever. “Some of the extreme weather events we’ve seen this year, such as wildfires and destructive storms, highlight the urgency for action to limit emissions and to integrate sustainable and responsible measures at every stage of tourism development projects. “Sustainability is one of the key tracks for our agenda at WTM London 2023, which means there will be several sessions throughout each day, culminating in the Summit on Day Three. “Travel has the power to change the world and through our influential debates with leading experts, our delegates will understand how they have the power to change travel.” This year’s conversation at the Sustainability Summit will align with the overall World Travel Market campaign around the Power to Change, with a big focus on sustainability, diversity, and inclusion. The sustainability discussions begin on Day One of WTM London on the Discover Stage, with sessions that will highlight success stories from around the world and explore how tourist boards and tour operators are adapting to new green regulations and consumer trends. On Day Two, Harold Goodwin, WTM Responsible Tourism Advisor and Managing Director of the Responsible Tourism Partnership, will lead the debate across six sessions on the Innovate Stage. The discussions will ask why responsible tourism makes business sense and examine the issues of “greenwashing” – then delve deeper into areas such as aviation, technology and overtourism. Losardo added: “The sustainability sessions and the Sustainability Summit will offer a unique platform for stakeholders to come together, exchange ideas and forge innovative solutions that will contribute to shaping the drive to greater sustainability in the tourism sector, fostering prosperity and responsible growth for all. “With investment in sustainable infrastructure being a key pillar of World Tourism Day, I’m delighted to take this opportunity to announce details of our sustainability sessions and the Sustainability Summit. “WTM London is where tourism professionals come together to play their part in the global conversation to create new futures.”- The Sustainability Summit at World Travel Market will take place from 10:30 - 13:00 on the Elevate Stage, on Day Three of WTM London (November 8).

It is confident of finishing the year close to three million. This follows a strong May where the airport welcomed 290,000 travellers, representing 65% of 2019 numbers for the same period. There were also very few cancellations in the month with airlines operating 98% of their schedules and delivering the best on time performance of any London airport. Amsterdam remained the most popular route but ahead of the Platinum Jubilee weekend a number of leisure routes proved popular, including Florence, Ibiza, Nice and Malaga. For the Jubilee weekend itself, the airport saw a spike of inbound bookings from Edinburgh, Luxembourg, Zurich, as well as from Amsterdam. The number of summer leisure routes from London City is set to swell in June with nine new destinations being added over the next three weeks. This includes a brand-new route to Thessaloniki in northern Greece and the return of direct services to Barcelona and Guernsey. In addition, LCY summer routes to Mahon, Santorini, Split, Quimper and Skiathos will also commence from mid-June Flights to Jersey will also restart. The Airport’s Chief Executive Officer, Robert Sinclair, said: “We are not only pleased to see the continued strength of the recovery, but also by the way in which our operation has performed over this period.“ Despite a big increase in flights and passengers along with our airline partners, we have continued to deliver speed, convenience and on time performance.”
