The return of the islands’ biggest Carnival, the 5th edition of Culture and Business Pride and the first ever new Digital & Nomad Fest!

Tenerife is not just an island for sunshine and beaches, the biggest of the Canaries is getting ready to host three major events in June: its world-famous Tenerife Carnival; the 5th edition of Culture & Business Pride; and the first-ever Digital & Nomad Fest. Whether looking for a great street party, an alternative proposal to the Pride celebrations or meting fellow digital nomads, Tenerife has something for everyone planning a trip to the island next month.

Here’s the top three not to be missed events:

Tenerife Carnival – the island’s biggest event

Santa Cruz, 3-26 June 2022

Tenerife Carnival, the island’s biggest event of colour and joy, is set to make a spectacular comeback after two years without celebrations. From 3 June, and lasting over a couple weeks, the streets of Tenerife’s capital city, Santa Cruz, will be full of magic with joie de vivre, freedom and extravagance. Tenerife Carnival is actually Spain’s biggest and the second most popular in the world after the one in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Visitors to the island will feel the true spirits of a carnival, some of the highlights include:

  • Carnival Queen Election Gala (10 June): Every edition of the Carnival has its queen, who is chosen amongst over a dozen candidates. The contestants wear the most spectacular costumes, made mainly of feathers, plastic, metal and rhinestones. These costumes can each weigh up to 400 kg!
  • The Opening Parade (24 June): involving the “murga” street music groups, “comparsa” bands and “rondallas” playing traditional old carnival songs together with the winners of individual and group costume awards parading down the streets of Santa Cruz.
  • Daytime Carnival + Rhythm & Harmony Party (26 June): This parade is the closing ceremony of the Carnival celebrations, with spectacular floats, troupes of dancers in glittering costumes and gloriously enthusiastic marching bands.

Tednomad – Tenerife Digital & Nomad Fest

Puerto de la Cruz, 2-5 June 2022

Tenerife is holding its first ever digital and nomad festival next month, called Tednomad. This is an exciting new event to challenge our relationship with work and understand the role of new technologies in shaping its future. Tenerife is one of the ten most popular destinations for remote workers and digital nomads by Nomadlist, and it will be on the island where this new format of festivals opens. It will offer conferences, round tables, music shows, meetings, and a thoughtful reflection on the changes those new technologies will generate in our environment and, especially, at work.

The event will consist of three sections:

  • Nomadcon: this is the highlight of the event, including conferences given by professionals/business leaders in the technology sectors and presentations on stage from national and international representatives/experts and opinion leaders. Some of the guests include the British ‘hacker’ who saved the world, Marcus Hutchins; US journalist and screenwriter, Dan Lyons; the former president of the New York Tech & Innovation Council and specialist in the future of work, Dror Poleg; and Spanish economist, Marc Vidal;
  • Meet & Built: the festival’s networking and meet-up area where visitors can make contacts from all areas and build links, business, new creations for remote and digital work environments;
  • Nodlesiure: a place for leisure at the event, a space to enjoy free time, concerts and other entertaining activities. Some of the artists who will be performing include DJ Achilles, Le Boom, Los Pilotos and Helado Negro.

Tednomad will take place 2-5 June at Lago Martianez, an award-winning leisure complex in the northern town of Puerto de la Cruz. The event, which will also be nomadic, will have its second stop in Malaga, called Madnomad, in December this year.

5th edition of Culture & Business Pride

Santa Cruz, 11-18 June 2022

From 11 to 18 June, Tenerife’s capital city will become the global centre of the LGTBIQ+ community with the host of the fifth edition of Culture and Business Pride. Concurring with the Tenerife Carnival, the event will feature more than fifty activities aimed at all audiences, with free admission and the focus on the international LGTBIQ+ community. Under the theme Another way of Loving, another way of Pride, Culture & Business Pride offers an alternative proposal to the Pride celebrations, opting for an event calendar aimed at everyone. In this fifth edition, some topics will be addressed to understand the LGTBIQ+ community in a global way, but it will also serve as a meeting and enjoyment point around an entire social movement.

Some of the renowned guests attending the festival include cyber-activist, Chelsea Manning; Polish MEP, Robert Biedron; Brazilian musician, Carlinhos Brown; and the group of Russian activists, Pussy Riot. This year, the Alan Turing LGTBIQ+ Awards ceremony will be resumed, recognising the work of a dozen personalities from around the world. This gala will be held at the iconic Tenerife Auditorium on 16 June.

All activities are free, open and accessible to all. For more information, visit: https://www.arnculturepride.org/
