Travel South, the official regional destination marketing organization for the southern United States, held its annual international convention in Atlanta last week and it proved to be a resounding success. From a destination perspective it solidified the city’s position as a premier destination for both domestic and international tourism whilst the convention brought together industry leaders, travel professionals, and media representatives from around the globe, fostering collaboration and driving growth within the Southern tourism sector.
As one would expect a key highlight of the convention was the series of successful business appointments. Much like all the well-run trade shows the pre-scheduled meetings provide a platform for attendees to connect with potential partners and discuss new opportunities, especially for destinations making their first efforts into the international inbound market.
To showcase the diverse offerings of Atlanta and the surrounding region, the convention included a variety of engaging tours and experiences. A particular favourite among attendees was the visit to Truist Park, the state-of-the-art home of the Atlanta Braves. This iconic ballpark, with its stunning architecture and vibrant atmosphere, provided a glimpse into the city’s passion for sports and entertainment.
Another popular excursion was the tour of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the world-class venue that will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Attendees were impressed by the stadium’s innovative design, cutting-edge technology, and commitment to sustainability. These visits reinforced Atlanta’s status as a global sports and cultural hub.
Beyond the sporting attractions, the convention also delved into the city’s rich cultural heritage. A tour of Cabbage town, a historic neighbourhood known for its vibrant arts scene, offered participants a unique opportunity to experience Atlanta’s creative side. The colourful murals, eclectic shops, and thriving artist community left a lasting impression on visitors.
To further enrich the cultural experience, attendees had the chance to visit the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum. This world-class institution showcased the life and legacy of the 39th President of the United States who turned 100 years old in October. Highlighting his commitment to peace, human rights, and public service the tour provided valuable insights into American history and educated attendees on the importance and value of diplomacy in a political environment.
In addition to the engaging tours and business appointments, the convention featured a series of informative sessions and panel discussions including presentations from the new CEO of Brand USA Fred Dixon and the CEO of Travel South Liz Bittner who both shared their insights on the latest trends, challenges, and prospects in the tourism industry.
The Travel South International Tourism Convention 2024 was not only a successful event but also served as evidence as to Atlanta’s growing prominence as a global destination. The city’s diverse attractions, world-class infrastructure, transport connections (it’s Deltas major hub) and Southern hospitality make it an ideal location for meetings, conventions, and leisure travel.
