MICE Opinion: The 60-minute difference

Susan Corrigan, Assistant Director of Sales at The Inn at Pocono Manor says a meeting at a property at least 60 minutes away from home turf raises MICE potential….here’s why

In the wake of the depressed meetings market of the past several years, The Inn at Pocono Manor has seen a notable upswing in the number of off-site meetings being booked by the corporate market.   At this time of year when we look back at our actual business versus that which was anticipated, we are seeing a striking trend toward corporate meetings from office locations sixty to ninety minutes from our location.

With increased funds being released for meetings, we are once again seeing planners take to the road, and a very specific amount of road it is.   I put myself in the seat of a planner and can feel the weight that is riding on the outcome of every conference being held off-site.    With site selection being such an early factor in the planning time line, a recurring theme with my clients is the need to remove the attendees from their day-to-day routines and mindset.

With that in mind, conference professionals have recognized that a sixty-to-ninety minute distance is just enough to create this disconnect for a mind focused on the daily list of activities, busy family lives and the many other distractions that cause our minds to wander and, at worst, lower attendance on the second day of a conference.

We have all been in that state of mind; we have attended day one of a meeting, had free time for several hours and decide to check in at the office or maybe run home to see the family before the evening events begin.    It takes a team of wild horses to get me in the car and back to the conference site once I’ve been home, and I’m sure I’m not alone in this.

We at the Inn at Pocono Manor are seeing that a sixty to ninety minute distance is an ideal balance that does not create transportation problems or extreme travel costs.  It does, however, allow the team mindset to settle in for the most productive and successful meetings possible.
