Multi-sport exploration in Maui
Tour firm Escape Adventures is offering a new energetic way to explore Maui, Hawaii.
A six-day adventure loops around the Maui valley between Pu’u Kukui to the West and Mt. Haleakal- to the East.
In addition to the road biking, surfing lessons and sea kayaking, this multi-sport adventure several unforgettable hikes offer a chance to see the island by foot.
"With over 20 ecosystems and lots of hills, cycling here is always an adventure," said Jared Fisher, Founder & Director of Escape Adventures.
"One minute we’ll be riding through a lush tropical rainforest, and the next we’ll turn the corner onto a huge, sunny lava flow, or drop down onto a private peninsula for some fresh, hot Hawaiian banana bread."
"We combine scenic cycling with great hiking, sea kayaking and even surfing, to pack the best Maui has to offer into an active, week-long Hawaiian retreat," said Fisher.
Day 1 | Cycling – West Maui Mountains
Begin the day biking along the coastline of the Mauna Kahalawai (West Maui Mountains). This western quarter of the island is an eroded volcano that is much older than Mt. Haleakala in the east. Later, climb up 1,000 feet through classic Maui scenery: valleys sprinkled with water falls, and sea cliffs line the route. Next, ride through the old Hawaiian fishing village of Kahakuloa where they still grow Taro.
Day 2 | Cycling & Sea Kayaking
Ride past the only winery in Maui along a road with little to no vehicle traffic for almost 40 miles. This route provides a great introduction to Hawaii with views of the ocean, mountains, and four of the other Hawaiian islands along the way. There is roughly 3,500 feet of elevation gain over this 30-mile ride.
Day 3 | Surfing & Free Time
Spend the morning learning to surf with a two-hour private lesson. Head out at the best time of the day to learn, in one of the best places to learn, with expert, personalised instruction. Then head into town for some shopping at the many shops and local markets or relax on one of Kihei’s public beaches. Those looking for more high-profile sun and sand can head south to world famous Big Beach.
Day 4 | Hike Mt. Haleakela
A trip to Mt. Haleakel- demonstrates the natural history of Hawaii up close. The summit area’s remarkable volcanic landscape quickly gives way to a variety of other ecosystems as one descends down into the park. Pass through several ecological zones on the drive to the summit. Here, a massive variety of native Hawaiian plants and animals thrive, including some species that exist nowhere else in the world.
Day 5 | Cycling Haiku to Ke’anae Village
Cycle through the rainforest to Ke’anae Village. A tropical atmosphere bursting with lush green foliage, combined with incredible views of both the ocean and Haleakela, make this one of the best rides on the planet. In Ke’anae, stop for hot banana bread as waves pound the lava rocks below. The day’s rides add up to over 3,000 feet of elevation change over more than 50 miles.
Day 6 | Hiking – Bamboo Forest
From the trailhead off the famous Hana highway, embark on a unique hiking adventure. Venture into a lush section of bamboo forest, passing three classic Hawaiian waterfalls along the route. Bring a swimsuit for a dip in the freshwater pools that lie at the base of the falls.
All internal land expenses and services are covered in the cost of the tour such as all transportation, food preparation, meals, snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, group supplies and community gear. Backcountry permits, licenses, park fees, reservations, and accommodations are also included, along with at least two professionally trained trip leaders, a mobile first aid and mechanic station, spare bikes, and a support vehicle(s).
Escape Adventures covers over 100 destinations, and caters to the full spectrum of active traveller, respective to fitness level and activity type from road cyclist to mountain biker hiker, and multi-sport enthusiast.
