Peru unveils two new cultural tourism products

To further expand global awareness, Promperu recently launched the Pisco Routes, which invite travelers to explore Peru’s historic wine– and pisco-making tradition across five southern coastal regions, including Ica and Arequipa, the drink’s birthplace. The project offers a holistic cultural experience with high quality standards across every service: from artisan distilleries and boutique lodging to local gastronomy and craft markets.

Peru meanwhile continues to push cultural tourism. Among new new cultural highlights, are the Route of the Pope and the recent Peñico archaeological discovery, underscoring its status as a global leader in historical heritage. Unveiled in July, the Route of the Pope connects dozens of landmarks associated with Pope Leo XIV’s decades-long mission in Peru.

The “Los Caminos del Papa León XIV” is headed by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism. The government pledged to invest US$150 million in church renovations, museums’ expansions, and roads.

Peñico site is over 3,800 years old and served as a connection point between the Peruvian coast and highlands. Four hours north of Lima, the desert Supe Valley -a UNESCO world heritage since 2009- has been home to Peñico, at the center Peru’s ancient Caral civilisation. The newly excavated site features 18 structures, including ceremonial temples and residential compounds. It also shows that the Caral people adapted to climate disaster such as desertification without turning to war. The Caral is considered the Americas’ oldest civilization.
