Shore power coming to Sydney cruise port
Ships calling at Sydney’s White Bay Cruise Terminal will be able to hook up to shore power within two years.
A deal has been inked to soon start construction on a landside charger in a $20 million port development.
It is estimated it will reduce emissions by over 4,000 tonnes each year at White Bay, with less noise and cleaner air for local residents..
Work will start before the end of 2024 and is slated to be operational by 2026.
It will eventually be mandatory for ships to switch off engines and use shore power.
It will be the first shore power installation in Australia.
NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen said: “The carbon emissions reduction this project will achieve is equivalent to taking 1,100 cars off Sydney’s roads each year.”
