Thailand closes border crossings after clash with Cambodia military

Thailand closed down border crossings with Cambodia after the recent military clash in the eastern province of Chanthaburi.

A Cambodia soldier was killed in late May after a clash, and tensions remain high.

Thailand and Cambodia share a 500-mile border.

Officials in Chanthaburi said crossings of Thai and Cambodian travellers are ‘temporarily suspended’ at two border checkpoints.

The Royal Thai Army said there is a threat to Thailand’s ‘sovereignty and security.’

The army says Cambodian workers may still enter Thailand and trade will not be impacted.

Six other border checkpoints have tightened restrictions.

“There has been a reinforcement of Cambodia military presence which has exacerbated tensions along the border,” Thai Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai claimed.

Officials of both countries will hold talks later this week.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said the country will ‘defend ourselves.’
