TUI Cruises climate action ad banned
A TUI Cruises advert has been banned and deemed misleading by a German court.
The Regional Court of Hamburg ruled for plaintiff, the German Environmental Aid, saying its use of the phrase ‘2050 net-zero cruise operation’ is misleading.
The company used the ad on its website but has now been forbidden from using it again.
The court opinion stated the ad gave the impression that emissions would be avoided entirely in its cruise operation by 2050, without any evidence, Germany media outlet ASB News reported.
If follows similar complaints upheld by the UK Advertising Standards Authority, which has been cracking down on statements in ads touting sustainability claims without evidence.
The agency upheld a complaint against expedition cruise line HX for environmental claims in an ad it says gave a ‘false impression.’
The ASA has also taken to task several airlines over their ‘misleading’ adverts in recent months.
