Wizz Air to boost its presence in Naples

Wizz Air is expanding its presence in southern Italy by adding a third Airbus A321neo aircraft to its Naples base and launching three new routes to Spain this winter.

Beginning December 14, 2026, the airline will introduce nonstop flights from Naples to Barcelona, Madrid and Bilbao while increasing frequencies on its Naples–Venice service. The expansion further strengthens Wizz Air’s position at Naples International Airport, where it is continuing to grow its network in partnership with airport operator GESAC.

The additional Airbus A321neo will allow Wizz Air to add more than 500,000 seats from Naples and expand its route network to 23 destinations across 13 countries.

The new services include daily flights to Barcelona, four weekly flights to Madrid operating every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and three weekly flights to Bilbao on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. At the same time, flights between Naples and Venice Marco Polo Airport will increase from 11 to 14 per week during the winter schedule.

The investment is expected to deliver an economic boost for the Campania region. Wizz Air estimates the expansion will create around 40 direct jobs, increasing its Naples-based workforce to more than 80 employees, while supporting an additional 350 indirect jobs across the local aviation and tourism sectors.

Since launching operations in Naples, Wizz Air has carried more than 6.7 million passengers through the airport.

Ian Malin, Chief Commercial Officer at Wizz Air, said Naples remains a key market for the airline’s long-term growth strategy in Italy.

Strengthening our Naples base with a third aircraft demonstrates our commitment to Southern Italy and supports our broader plans to improve regional connectivity,” Malin said.

He also confirmed the carrier’s plans to expand at nearby Salerno Airport. Wizz Air expects to launch three new international routes from Salerno in 2027, with plans to grow that network to six routes by 2030.

We are proud to work alongside GESAC to improve air connectivity across the region and provide more travel opportunities for our customers,” he added.

GESAC CEO Roberto Barbieri said the latest investment reinforces Naples Airport’s growing importance as an international gateway.

The arrival of a third based aircraft and new routes to Spain reflects the success of our partnership with Wizz Air,” Barbieri said. “The airline already offers the largest network from Naples to Central and Eastern Europe, and this expansion further strengthens Campania’s position on the international aviation map.”

Barbieri added that Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport will also benefit from the airline’s future growth plans, helping improve access to one of Italy’s fastest-growing tourism regions.

The expansion follows strong growth already recorded this summer. Wizz Air has increased its capacity at Naples by 62% year over year, with scheduled frequencies for summer 2026 up 133.6% compared with the previous summer. The airline is operating 3,260 flights from Naples this season and offering more than 1.1 million seats.

Italy remains one of Wizz Air’s largest markets. The airline carried more than 21 million passengers in the country during 2025, an 8% increase over the previous year. With 44 aircraft based across Italy and a market share of 12%, Wizz Air is now the country’s second-largest airline and plans to offer more than 32 million seats across its Italian network in 2026.
