An Atlanta developer wants to build the longest and highest indoor ski dome in the world.
The $1 billion indoor winter wonderland would have three indoor hockey rinks, five half-mile ski runs, a half-pipe for snowboarding, a one-mile track for snowmobiles, four hotels, 30 restaurants and 800,000 square feet of residential and retail space, says the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
Known as “Mount Pegasus,” the development would be one of the largest resort destinations in Georgia, covering 400 acres southeast of the intersection of Georgia 400 and Ga. 53 in Dawsonville.
The site is across from the North Georgia Premium Outlets and a 900,000-square-foot retail project proposed by The Sembler Co., reports the newspaper.
There are about 15 large indoor ski venues in the world and dozens of smaller ones. But Mount Pegasus would be four times larger than the largest ski dome built so far.
The first indoor ski facility in the United States, a $1.3 billion project called Meadowlands Xanadu, is planned to open in 2008 off the New Jersey Turnpike, a few miles from Manhattan.
The developer of the proposed Georgia project, Steve Winters, said Dawsonville is a perfect spot for Mount Pegasus because it’s “within 100 miles of 6 million people” with disposable income and little access to snowy peaks.
