100 Zimbabwean tourism companies go bankrupt
At least 100 Zimbabwean tourism companies have been forced to close over the past year, with scores more downscaling their operations due to political turmoil, the Zimbabwean Tourism Authority (ZTA) reports.
The ZTA told local newspapers that a growing crisis in the country’s tourism industry had cost Zimbabwe an estimated 20 000 jobs after 100 small and mid-sized tourism operators closed their doors over the past 12 months.
“And those are only the companies that we know about. There are scores of unregistered companies that might have gone bankrupt that we are unaware of.” Even major hospitality corporations such as the Rainbow Tourism Group (RTG) and Meikles Africa have been forced to mothball some of their lodges and hotels due to a dramatic decrease in the numbers of foreign tourist arrivals.
Zimbabwe’s Council for Tourism (ZCT) expressed concern at the crisis this week, and urged the government to urgently implement proposed tourism industry reforms, including waiving visas for visitors from key tourism countries.
