10,000 hotels targeted in sustainability campaign
The Travel Foundation is targeting 10,000 hotels in Mediterranean holiday resorts in a campaign to encourage them to be more sustainable.
The charity will offer owners of properties in Spain, Turkey and Greece information on how to save energy, source supplies locally and manage waste wisely.
This draws on the Federation of Tour Operator’s Supplier Sustainability Guidelines and an audit by the Foundation of three hotels against the FTO’s criteria.
Posters will also be provided to highlight tips directly to hotel staff in key areas such as housekeeping and kitchens, as well as a customer-facing poster for hotel notice-boards.
The information pack includes a leaflet giving The Travel Foundation’s top ten bite-sized tips and an accompanying DVD provides a guide to show hoteliers how to implement the advice.
The packs will be translated into the local language will be distributed to hoteliers via UK tour operators and the FTO.
Travel Foundation chief executive Sue Hurdle said: “The idea of 10,000 hotels saving up to 25% of their water and energy use is a big deal.
“We’re keen to demonstrate that small changes by tourism businesses can make a really big difference to their bottom line – and locally to destinations. With the growing interest in ‘green’ issues in the UK as well, businesses can use sustainability to appeal to customers – and in fact risk getting left behind if they don’t.”
First Choice head of corporate social responsibility Jane Ashton said: “Our customers are increasingly keen to stay in hotels which can be seen to respect the natural environment and bring benefits to local communities.
“These Hotel Makeover materials provide very practical guidance to help hoteliers green their businesses, and will be a great support to First Choice as we actively work with our key suppliers to improve the sustainability of our holidays.”
