10,000 more emails needed for Fair Tax on Flying campaign

Wednesday, 15 August 20123 min read

Less than 10,000 more emails are needed to reach the target set for the Fair Tax on Flying campaign.

The campaign, launched by the travel industry, has been calling on members of the public to email their MP to complain about the high levels of Air Passenger Duty.

Since the initiative was launched seven weeks ago, over 90,000 people have now voiced their support, including influential business groups like the Institute of Directors and the Taxpayers’ Alliance, and celebrities Chesney Hawkes and Cheryl Baker.

Organisers said social media had played a bit part in spreading the word.

A link to the campaign website has been sent by thousands of people on Twitter, and the campaign’s Facebook page has nearly 13,000 ‘likes’.

The campaign was boosted last month when Sir Richard Branson backed A Fair Tax on Flying in a blog post, and Virgin Atlantic announced it would include a message on Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holiday e-tickets, directing passengers to the campaign site.

ABTA CEO Mark Tanzer said: "The incredible volume of support by travellers just goes to show that this is an issue of huge concern to consumers once they are made aware of the shockingly high levels of tax they pay to fly.

"Everyone in the industry has a key role to play in increasing awareness, we’ve managed 90,000 in a few weeks, we can do even better."
