150 years of San Francisco cable cars
The Bay Area marks 150 years of the San Francisco cable cars with a series of special events.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and non-profit partner Market Street Railway, will help stage a series events this summer.
The six-month-long celebration kicked off this week when Mayor of San Francisco London Breed and other officials rode “Big 19”, the oldest surviving cable car, originally built in 1883.
The celebrations include the first-ever public tours of the San Francisco Municipal Railway carpentry workshop and history-themed tours of districts served by the cable car lines.
San Francisco’s cable cars are one of the only moving National Historic Landmarks in the United States.
Starting 1 July, a special $5 all-day pass will let riders hop on and off the California cable car line and explore the eclectic range of neighborhoods along the route.
“For the last 150 years, residents and visitors have enjoyed riding our cable cars through to experience stunning bay views,” said Mayor Breed.
“You cannot imagine San Francisco without our iconic cable cars.”
