Gunmen targeted the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul on Saturday, taking guests hostage.

A 12-hour standoff with security forces ended Sunday with the deaths of 14 foreign nationals and the four gunmen.

The victims included nine people from Ukraine and one person each from Greece, Germany and Kazakhstan.

The nationalities of two other people were not yet known.

Ten people were injured, including four civilians.

The attack began at about 9pm local time on Saturday (4.30pm GMT).

Some reports say the hotel had been hosting an IT conference.

The attack came just days after the US embassy in Kabul issued a warning about hotels in the city, saying it was aware of planned attacks by extremist groups.

However, the warning was centred on another hotel near the international airport.
