24 Hours in Denver: A whirlwind tour of culture, history, and food

Whatever the reason for visiting Colorado, the chances are high you will be entering via the gateway of Denver, the Mile-High City.

Make sure you add some time on at the beginning of the itinerary as the city offers a fascinating blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty. As it is way above sea level, Denver can act as a high altitude acclimatisation zone. With its diverse cultural scene, rich history, and vibrant culinary landscape, it’s a city that can captivate even the most seasoned traveller in a mere 24 hours.  I had the opportunity to do so at the end of the summer at a time when the weather is almost perfect consisting of sunny days, clear blue skies and cooler evenings.

First up was a morning at the Denver Botanic Gardens, a serene oasis nestled in the heart of the city. This sprawling 23-acre garden boasts a diverse collection of plants from around the world. Wander through the Japanese Garden, the York Street Perennial Walk, and the Children’s Garden, each offering a unique experience. Make sure you have enough battery power in your camera as there is a photogenic sight to behold every corner you turn.

For lunch I would recommend a local favourite by indulging in a tasty morsel or two at Levan Deli and in particular check out the range of mouth-watering sandwiches. I partook of a classic Reuben (grilled sandwich composed of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing) which alongside a local beer more than satisfied my cravings.

I walked just around the corner to a rather understated but nevertheless magnificent museum detailing the growth and development of the state aptly named History Colorado. From prehistoric times to the present day the collection of exhibits chronicles the state’s rich history, including the Colorado Gold Rush, the Native American tribes of the region, and the state’s significant contributions to American culture and innovation.

Of all the elements on display one item stood out and that was the details pertaining to the Sand Creek Massacre which occurred on November 29, 1864. Here 675 US troops attacked a camp of Cheyenne and Arapaho people in Colorado, killing over 230 Native Americans, mostly women and children. A dark day in history but here in the state’s capital the details were there to examine, including statements from relatives who had been involved. Sobering.

It was time to lighten the mood and a short ride away Denver’s very own Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey distillery awaited. It is an exploration of the manufacturing process and some samples to explain the various grades and flavours available. A very enjoyable way to spend an hour and a half.

As the sun began to set, I headed to Rioja, a Michelin-starred restaurant that offers a sophisticated dining experience. The restaurant’s innovative menu features dishes that highlight the best of Colorado’s local ingredients and with the help of a very knowledgeable sommelier I was able to pair each course with a suitable wine from an iextensive list. I started with the mixed greens salad served with coconut vinaigrette, followed by the Amish chicken that came with Domingo Rojo beans, sofrito puree, crispy garlic and chicharron almonds. I had to Google most of the ingredients, but the taste was supreme. Highly recommended.

After dinner it is worth taking a slow stroll through the charming streets of the Lower Downtown (LoDo) neighbourhood admiring the historic brick buildings and maybe, enjoy a nightcap at one of the many lively bars.

In just 24 hours, you can experience the best of the state capital. From its cultural attractions and historical sites to its world-class dining and nightlife, the Mile-High City offers something for everyone.

Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie or just a regular tourist, Denver is sure to leave a lasting impression.
