“50 dead” in India rail crash

Up to 50 people are reported to have been killed in a head-on train crash in northern India. According to reports, an express train and a local train crashed in the Hoshiarpur region, in the northern state of Punjab. Sky News reports that up to 250 people were injured in the crash, with the army being called in to deal with the situation and villagers helping to free trapped passengers. A station superintendent from the city of Jammu is quoted as saying that one of the trains was an express train heading from Jammu to the city of Bhopal, adding: “We have got the information that there has been a head-on crash but at the moment, we do not know how many casualties.” Report by Tim Gillett, News From Abroad Ltd
