Leipzig in Eastern Germany has officially opened Stadthafen Leipzig, a new waterfront destination that creates a central gateway to the city’s extensive network of rivers and lakes after a quarter-century of planning and development.
Opened at the end of June 2026, the new city harbor is located less than a mile from Leipzig‘s New Town Hall and serves as the centerpiece of the Leipzig New Lakeland, giving residents and visitors direct access to one of Germany’s most attractive urban waterway systems.
The harbor’s signature feature is its distinctive basin, which occupies 4,025 square meters of the 13,800-square-meter site. Designed in the shape of a grand piano, the basin pays tribute to the renowned Blüthner piano manufacturer, whose factory once stood on the site and whose instruments helped make Leipzig famous in concert halls around the world.
The project was created from a timber-hybrid construction reflecting traditional maritime architecture while reducing the development’s environmental footprint.
The marina offers berths for three passenger vessels and 40 recreational and family boats, along with docking facilities for paddle craft including kayaks and canoes. Six additional passenger-boat berths are located along the outer pier, with the first vessels already in operation. In keeping with the city’s sustainability goals, only electric-powered boats that comply with established height and size restrictions are permitted to use the harbor.
Visitors will also find a variety of dining and event facilities. DOCK 20 features a self-service café alongside a 43-seat à la carte restaurant, welcoming guests daily from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. Above the restaurant, the Eventloft accommodates up to 110 guests and opens onto a balcony overlooking the harbor. Just a short walk away, the historic Blüthner Wine Café occupies the piano manufacturer’s former villa, dating back to 1858.
The new harbor will quickly become a venue for public events. Its inaugural Grand Harbor Festival takes place July 18–19 with a weekend of street food and entertainment. An Autumn and Wine Festival follows on September 25–26, while a festive Christmas market will be held on two Advent weekends, December 12–13 and December 19–20.
Leipzig is home to nearly 300 kilometers of rivers and waterways, complemented by a network of lakes to the south and west of the city. Stadthafen Leipzig now provides the main gateway between the city center and the Leipzig New Lakeland.
Visitors can join public sightseeing boat tours or rent a canoe or kayak to explore the waterways independently, passing former industrial landmarks and traveling through Leipzig’s protected alluvial forest before reaching Lake Cospuden, a former open-pit mine that has been transformed into one of the region’s premier recreational lakes.
