7,000 Alitalia jobs on the line

Sunday, 01 Sep, 2004 0

Alitalia is reportedly ready to lay off some 7,000 workers in an attempt to avoid the carrier going bankrupt later this month.

According to The Guardian newspaper, executives at the airline are proposing to get rid of a third of the carrier’s 20,000 jobs, while at the same time creating a smaller airline, AZ Fly.

Union leaders will announce the deal next week, the newspaper reports. The Guardian reports that Alitalia has admitted it has just 72 million euros in the bank – enough to pay employees to the end of this month.

It adds that the carrier has been losing losing 1.2 million euros a day, with total losses of 329 million euros for the first half of this year.
