Friday, 11 January 20083 min read

The 40,000 square miles of Ohio stretch from the northern ports on Lake Erie through the Amish country to the Appalachian southeastand German southwest. Let’s explore some of the state’s highlights on a seven-day itinerary that packs a lot of great experiences into each day. We’ll begin in the southwest corner of the state and angle to the northeast to Cleveland, then follow the Lake Erie shoreline west to the Toledo region. This trip comes in under 600 miles, plus any side trips you might choose to add.

Greater Cincinnati lies at the corner of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, among rolling hills along the Ohio River. Start at Fountain Square in the middle of downtown.
This public park is where Cincinnatians connect. The historic Tyler Davidson Fountain is dedicated to the people of the city. Other highlights here include the relatively new National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian that relates the history and importance of the Underground Railroad.

The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden has a reputation as one of the best in the country, with exhibits including manatees, polar bears, gorillas, elephants and more. The featured exhibit at the Newport Aquarium is its “Surrounded by Sharks” display. The Cincinnati Museum Center at the art deco Union Terminal includes an Omnimax Theater and museums such as the natural history and science museum and Cincinnati in Motion.

For a change of pace, get onto the river with one of the area’s many scenic sightseeing Ohio River cruises. The next day, travel less than an hour north on I-75 to Dayton, home to Wilbur and Orville Wright and the birthplace of aviation.
