More than an extra million Americans are expected to hit the highway and airports this Thanksgiving.
The American Automobile Association projects a 12-year high of 51 million travellers will head home, traveling at least 50 miles for the holidays.
That equates to an extra 1.6 million compared to last year, or a 3.2% increase.
"The holiday season will be in full swing next week with more people taking to the nation’s roads, skies, rails and waterways compared with last year," said Martha Mitchell Meade, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic.
"A strong economy and labor market are generating rising incomes and higher consumer confidence, fueling a strong year for the travel industry, which will continue into the holiday season."
AAA says average airfares are at their lowest level since 2013 and expects about 3.95 million travelers at the nation’s airports.
It forecasts about 1.48 million will go on a cruise or travel home by bus or train.
The organization says average car rental daily rates will reach their highest level for five years at $70 per day, and gas prices are up.
According to research by Allianz Global Assistance, the most popular US getaway destination for the holidays is New York followed by Atlanta and LA.
Cancun is tops for overseas travel, based on analysis of more than 4.5 million travel plans by US customers.
